Hedy West first introduced this Appalchian classic in the Folk revival of the earlu 1960's. John Philips (Journeymen. Mamas and Papas) did a very succesful 'Pop' adaptation for The Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul, & Mary but I prefer this country version by Bobby Bare. I decided to sing his 'spoken verse' instead.
