about

Gerry Joly was a French Canadian singer/songwriter from the Ottawa area. This song, from his 1969 debut album, was a gigantic hit in French for TV star Willie Lamothe. Even Celine Dion has sung this one but I had never heard it.
I decided to translate the verses to English rather than mangle them 'en Francais'.

lyrics

Mille Après Mille
(Gerald Joly/Engish Translation S.Palmer)

My life is a long endless highway
And I can’t really say where I'm bound
Tho I drift thru your towns and your cities
I’ll search ‘til my destiny is found

Mille après mille je suis triste
Mille après mille je m'ennuie
Jour après jour sur la route
Tu n'peux pas savoir comme j'peux t'aimer

This road that I’m on seems so endless
Each step that I take seems in vain
I still see your face, how it haunts me
and I wish I’d had a reason to stay

Mille après mille je suis triste….

One day, when my journeys will have ended
one day when my destiny comes true
There in the peace that I dream of
You’ll tell me my searching is through

Mille après mille je suis triste…

Mile after mile I’m still lonely
Mile after mile I’m still blue
Day after day on this highway
You won’t know how much I love you
You won’t know how much I love you
Tu n'peux pas savoir comme j'peux t'aimer

about

Stephen Hardy Palmer Gatineau, Québec

‘There are miles in Palmer’s voice; you can almost see the scenery that his mind has captured through the decades of his life. Palmer’s songwriting and guitar playing are tasteful and bittersweet, his music is crafted with feeling and poetic flair. I’m reminded of another acoustic icon, Gordon Lightfoot.”- TwangTown Magazine ... more
